Success Story of Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) | V. G. Siddhartha

How the Success Story of Cafe Coffee Day goes! That is all, what Mr. V. G. Siddhartha did to make Cafe Coffee Day, a Top Brand in many countries.  CCD has become the Most Popular Range of Restaurant in India.  The whole credit goes to the CCD Owner VG Siddhartha.

Founder V.G. Siddhartha

Cafe Coffee Day is the most popular Coffee Joint in India. It was founded by V.G. Siddhartha. His family was the owners of the coffee plantation in Chikmagalur district, Karnataka. They have been in the coffee industry for more than 140 years.

Siddhartha completed his Master’s in Economics from Mangalore University, Karnataka. He has two children with his wife Malavika Krishna Siddhartha. He did not take over the charge of his family business and prosperity because he wanted to do something great.

Siddhartha was born to be an entrepreneur. In addition to that, he has exceptional business development skills and great entrepreneurial acumen. His dedication and sheer hard work made his empire of $1.09 Billion net worth.

How He acquired acres of Land

After his graduation when he was 21, he decided to do something of his own instead of joining the family legacy. His father accepted his decision and presented him Rs.5 lakhs to experiment and explore.

He first bought a piece of land with Rs.3 lakhs and saved the rest. He went to Bombay later and rented a room at Dhaba Hotel. The next day Siddhartha walked into JM Financial’s Office and met Mahendra Kampani without an appointment. He initially worked there as an intern and then as an employee for two years.

He learned the Indian Stock Markets ins & outs and started buying his own estates with his investment profits.

Siddhartha shifted back to Banglore and used his savings to launch his financial firm. He invested a lot in the stock market and also took over a company called Sivan Securities. He completely transformed the company by making it a grand success.

Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company (ABC)

After almost 10 years, Siddhartha received an offer from a German company, Tchibo, who wanted to buy coffee beans from him. Tchibo started in a 10 ft. shop with very little investment and turned into a global Multi-Million Dollar business within 40 years.

Siddhartha was inspired and got a new perspective after he got this offer. In 1993, he started exporting coffee, expanded and called his company Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company (ABC). The company ABC flourished, became India’s largest coffee exporter and established a Billion-Dollar Empire.

After a while, the Government levied high taxes, due to rising demand for coffee. Siddhartha realized the business might go down and International competitors would jump in to take his place. This scenario made him take the responsibility of convincing the Union Government to cut down the taxes.

Started Cafe Coffee Day (CCD)

In 1994, he decided to take a giant leap and launched 20-25 stores around Bengaluru and Chennai for selling his coffee powder. In a year itself, he realized that even this business won’t do him much good, so, he adopted the café culture.

He worked with his team and decided to open up cafés across the country under a budget of Rs.1.5 Cr. Initially to attract the youth he offered a cup of coffee for INR 25 with free internet. This concept was a huge success as the internet was a luxury back then. He named his cafes as Cafe Coffee Day, also known as CCD.

The ABC company is the largest producer of Arabica beans in the continent with 12,000 acres of coffee plantations and sells almost 35k tonnes of coffee per year. CCD won many awards.
